Just Black and White

This image was created from a black and white photograph of Bryan Cramer and altered in Photoshop to remove all the gray tones.

This technique mimics creation of prints using lith film, a process I have explained before in detail. (So I won't bore regular readers with a recap.)

The technique is best on photographs that are very contrasty to begin with.

This photo was taken in direct window light which created harsh shadows which were a challenge to work with when making a standard print with full tonal range if you strive to show detail in the shadows.

Eye of the Orb

Bryan contacted me several years ago when he was working on building a modeling portfolio, and we arranged a trade/test shoot.

We did the shoot at the beach and a park over looking the beach. This photo is at the entrance to a large wooden sculpture that I call "the orb". It's made of wood, rounded and formed into a partial sphere with two gaps. I love the texture of the structure in b&w and the gaps allow light to hit a model from two sides.

The series taken in the eye of the orb are some of the strongest from the shoot.

Volleyball

Bryan came to me by way of an agent who was taking him around to various photographers to build his portfolio. I worked with this same agent on several other portfolio building assignments. Bryan was by far the most talented model she presented. He and I hit it off creatively and did one more shoot later that year.
This style of photography is not what I normally do and is probably a lot more commercial than my other work, but it was fun working with Bryan and stretching myself a little.
