Dwain - Chair #3

White Steel

Model Dwain has his own blog site called White Steel over at Tumblr. I happened to browse the site this evening. As I was admiring his terrific images captured by many photographers, I saw this one captured by . . . me! Oddly it was one I had never done anything with until I saw it on his blog. Afterwards I took the opportunity to find the original raw image and rework it a bit in Photoshop.  The brilliance of the image is mostly due to Dwain's physique. Dwain is one of the best models I have ever worked with. Killer face and physique and a creative mind. Over the last few years I've done a series of photos of models in the open doorway of this bedroom. This week's image is Dwain's contribution to that series.

This image features the angelic form of Dwain, easily one of the most beautiful and talented models I have worked with. Not only was his physical condition impeccable, not only is his face gorgeous, he is is also extremely intelligent and creative. It's a killer combination that shows in all his work.

Rapture

The inspiration for this image was imagining what it might be like to be taken in the Rapture.

The fantastic physique of Dwain is featured in this image, which is a black and white rendering of a color digital image taken several years ago. This image has been made available in my Fine Art America gallery today.

Double Vision

The double exposure is an old photographic effect, usually created by exposing two different images on the same negative. In prior postings on this blog I have shown a different type of double exposure created by developing one photograph from two negatives sandwiched together in the enlarger.

In my progression from film to digital imagery I have been experimenting with different ways to create similar effects without the use of film. The three images in this week's blog are the result of this experiment.


In each case I have taken two digital images of the same model. I opened both in Photoshop, then copied and pasted one over the other as a second layer. Then in the layer dialog box I chose the blending mode "Difference" and an opacity level near 100%.
As I began this experiment I tried each of the different blending modes and played with different opacity levels for each, trying to duplicate the effect one gets with film. None of them duplicated the effect, but the method I used to create these images creates an interesting alternative to the film approach.
In particular I like the way this effect works on models with great muscle definition, like the two images of Dwain. It creates a hard edge that accentuates the muscle definition.
In the final image of the three, the overlap of the two images creates a kind of halo effect around the interior image.
Expect to see a new gallery on my website in the near future filled with other images like these as I continue experimenting.

Out With the Old

This week several of my favorite images that were photographed during 2007 are not only here in my final blog for 2007, they are available for sale on eBay.

Both are open edition black and white silver gelatin prints on fiber paper printed by me to archival specifications. The images are 8 by 12 inches on 11 by 14 inch matte paper. The starting bid for both is $10.00, which is considerably less than the amount charged for gallery prints on my website.

The first image displayed in this blog is of model Dwain Leland. The shot comes from one of my favorite shoots of the year.

The second image is of Alan Demond, an amazingly gifted bodybuilder.

I enjoyed working with both of these models so much that I shot them twice and each time the results of our creative collaboration were amazing.

Rapture

This image comes from a series that was the brainchild of the model. Dwain imagined that he was floating upward, being drawn into the heavens. As the series proceeds the images look more and more like his body is floating upwards against the black background, but this image where he is simply rising from his knees and looking upward is one of the most arresting and powerful.
